Karur: Harness excess water of Cauvery at Panjapatti lake

KARUR: Harness the excess water running down the Cauvery during times of flooding at the Panjapatti lake in Karur district so that hundreds of wells in the Krishnarayapuram taluk and surrounding areas could recharge easily, District Congress Committee has opined.

Reiterating a long pending demand of the people of the region, the committee that met here on Tuesday, pointed out that during flood or when excess water flows down the Cauvery, the water could be conveyed to the Panjapatti lake using cement concrete pipes from the river off Mayanur using the gradient force and stored in the lake spread over 840-odd acres.

The stored water could be utilised better than be allowed to run waste through proper planning, the Congress leaders stressed.

Road repair

The meeting also highlighted the need for repairing the rain-damaged Velliyanai-Jagadabi, Gandhigramam-Ramanur, Vangal-Nerur and Karur-Tiruchi roads expeditiously so that public would not be put to great hardship.

The subway construction at Kulathupalayam should be expedited, a resolution noted.

Another resolution expressed the desire of the District Congress Committee to take forward efficiently the membership enrolment drive of the party.

District Congress Committee president Bank K. Subramanian, former MLAs T.N. Sivasubramanian, V. Ramanathan, participated.
