Unicef: India: Lagging in Fighting Measles

India is the global laggard in reducing measles deaths, with three-quarters of the 164,000 deaths from measles that still occur worldwide annually, according to data released Thursday by the United Nations. The developing world has made extraordinary strides in reducing measles deaths, with Africa cutting them by more than 90 percent since 2000. Vast immunization campaigns have helped save more than four million lives, most of them children, in less than a decade. But India is not planning to use that strategy to control measles next year in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, two poor states where most of India’s measles deaths occur, a Unicef official said in a telephone news conference.
