Dharmapuri: Forest officials seize panther skin, pair of tusks

Seven persons arrested in Dharmapuri district

DHARMAPURI: Panther skin and a pair of ivory tusks were seized by the forest officials in Dharmapuri district recently. Seven persons were arrested, T.R. Palanivel, Assistant Conservator of Forests told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Chief Conservator of Forests S. Varadarajulu, Dharmapuri Circle and F.R. Ikram Mohammed Shah, District Forest Officer laid a trap in Palacode and Papparapatti based on a tip off in the last week of November.

The team led by Mr.Palanivel and Forest Ranger K. Krishnan caught the panther skin for the first time in Savulur Road near Papparapatti from the poachers on November 26.

P. Jayavel of Papparapatti, P. Murugan of Mangapatti and G. Raju of Periyanur were arrested and remanded in this connection. The cost of the skin may be around Rs.5 lakh in the international market.

In the trap laid at Palacode, a pair of ivory weighing 2.6 kg was seized in Gandhi Road, Palacode in Dharmapuri district on November 27.

Four persons, C. Ponmudi, S. Shankar both from Marandaalli and J. Mani of Palacode and C. Madesh of Seeriampatti were arrested by the team of forest officials. The cost of the ivory would be around Rs.3 lakh in the international market, the sources said.

One held for killing female elephant

Meanwhile, a female elephant was shot dead by an agriculturist in Norpanatti village near Kelamangalam in Krishnagiri district few days back when a herd entered the farms.

Forest officials arrested Sivappa (45) and are searching for the other farmer who trained their country made guns against the herd.
