Rajkot: Villagers build resort for eco-tourism in Banni

BHUJ: In the first of its kind development, people of Dordo village in Banni are all set to foray into hospitality sector by setting up a village resort, showcasing ancient architecture of Kutch with traditional Kutchi cuisine on its menu. The mini resort will be run by the village panchayat with help from state tourism department.

The state tourism department authorized the village panchayat to develop and maintain the resort after the panchayat successfully looked after the construction of 24 bhungas (mud houses) erected for the recently concluded Rann utsav.

“The state government’s objective is to develop Dordo as the place for eco-tourism for which the village resort will become the star attraction,” said Dordo sarpanch Miya Hussein Gulbeg. According to Gulbeg, after the successful holding of Rann utsav, the state government showed keen interest in developing 500-acre of land in Dordo for eco-tourism.

“At present, wall painting and mud work by artisans specialized in Kutchi art is being carried out in bhungas by a team of 20 woman artists and two sculptors. Each bhunga will have sofa set and bed made of clay with wall painting reflecting the ancient culture of Kutch and Sindh,” said village talati Dipak Parmar. Tourists will be also served dishes from Kutchi culinary like bajari rotla,’ khiraj,’ and lasan ni chatni’.

Scheduled to open in January 2010 for tourists, the resort will be solely run by the panchayat. The tourism department will help them in getting bookings. “Tourists will be able to make online bookings for the resort on the tourism department website,” Parmar added.
