Cuddalore: Six colonies remain waterlogged for weeks

CUDDALORE: At least six residential colonies in Koothapakkam area in the town remain waterlogged for the past three weeks. These include Palani Pillai Nagar, Postal Nagar and Anna Nagar.

V. Siddharathan, a resident, said that during rainy season, the entire area was surrounded by water. Children, women and the aged had to wade through knee-deep water.

The condition of roads had become worse owing to unfinished underground drainage work and intermittent rain.

Mr. Siddharthan said it was a challenge to two-wheeler riders and bicyclists to traverse through the waterlogged streets. Autorickshaw drivers avoided the area fearing slush.

The area had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. A proper drainage facility alone would solve the problem, he added.

Drawing the attention of local bodies to the problem of inundation in residential colonies, members of the Federation of All Residents’ Welfare Associations of Cuddalore staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Tuesday.

According to M. Marudhavanan, general secretary of the federation, lack of drainage facility and unscientific way of laying roads were the reasons for waterlogging in several residential colonies of the town and neighbouring panchayats.

To tackle the problem, the federation sought draining facilities in three rivers – the Gedilam, the Pennaiyaru and the Uppanaru running through the town.

It also urged the authorities to repair the damaged roads.
