Tirunelveli: Repair irrigation channel

Release water into Pallamadai irrigation tank: farmers

TIRUNELVELI: Demanding the immediate repair of an irrigation channel and release of water into Pallamadai irrigation tank near Maanur in the district, a group of farmers staged a dharna on the Collectorate premises on Mondayfor a while when they came to submit a petition to Collector M. Jayaraman during the grievance day meeting.

The petitioners said Sampankulam, Seethaikurichikulam, Therkkupattikulam, Pattankulam, Puthukkulam, Perumalpuram, Iluppaikulam, Aanaimalaikulam, Pungankulam and Pallamadaikulam were getting water from the Nettoor check-dam through the Pallikottaiyaan channel.

However, the Pallamadaikulam, source of irrigation for over 3,000 acres of land, was not getting water for the past few years.

“Since the channel that brings water to Pallamadaikulam was in a bad shape, petitions were submitted to the officials concerned on several occasions, but in vain. Consequently, the farmers having land under this irrigation system have been badly hit,” said the farmers, who squatted on the road a few metres away from the District Development Council Hall, where the weekly grievance day meeting was going on with Mr. Jayaraman in the chair.

Though the agitation triggered heated arguments instantly between the police and the protestors, who threatened to go on an indefinite fast on the Collectorate premises until their demand was met, they were pacified by the officials.

Subsequently, some of the protestors submitted a petition to the Collector later. Demanding the immediate relaying of the service road around Vannarpet traffic island, a group of Bharatiya Janata Party workers, wearing masks, submitted a petition to the Collector.

A group of senior citizens from Aayalpatti near Sankarankovil handed over a petition to the Collector seeking old age pension and monthly assistance being extended to widows.
