Mumbai: Khar & Bandra restaurants chip in, no more plastic bags

Giving a major boost to the campaign against plastic carrybags in the city, 27 restaurants from the plush Khar and Bandra areas — including those situated along the busy arterial Linking Road and SV Road — have agreed to do away with plastic bags for more environment-friendly options like paper or cloth.

Restaurants like China Garden, Olive Bar, Firangi Pani, Out of the Blue, Open Affair and Rajasthan Restaurant as well as the Kadam & Pamosh Group of Restaurants have volunteered to join the drive that started on Saturday. Together, these restaurants are estimated to see more than 2,000 takeaway and home delivery orders a day.

The decision came at a meeting of Khar police officers, civic authorities and Khar 33rd Road Resident Association members on Saturday. The BMC and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board are looking to tighten their vigilance against plastic bags below 50 microns in thickness, even as the corporators remain divided on a total ban on plastic.
