Salem: Steps taken to ensure adequate water supply: Collector

ATTUR: The administration has taken steps to sink more borewells in different parts of the district to ensure adequate supply of water to the people, Collector J. Chandrakumar has said.

He was speaking at the special mass contact programme held in Ottapatti village panchayat near here on Wednesday.

The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board has been instructed to identify the areas which are having water supply issues. A proposal will be sent to the State government to get funds and sink new borewells, which will help meet the growing water demand in various parts of the district, the Collector said.

Speaking on the features of Anaithu Grama Anna Marumalarchi Thittam, the Collector said that the State government had taken up over 1.29 lakh development works in different parts of the district at a cost of Rs. 552 crore in the last four years. Of them, over 90,000 works had been completed. The implementation of the remaining works was progressing steadily. Over 3,000 works had been sanctioned to Peddanaickanpalayam block alone. Of them, 2,081 works had been completed and remaining works were being carried out, he said.

The government had taken up works such as formation of road, improvement of the burial ground, creation of sporting facilities, construction of a library and creation of a pond under the scheme in Ottapatti village panchayat, he added.

The Collector assured that all the eligible families in the village would be given free colour television sets.

Mr. Chandrakumar said that the government had introduced the Kalaignar Insurance Scheme for Life Saving Treatments particularly for the benefit of the families living below poverty line. Over 7.28 lakh people had been photographed for the distribution of identity cards under the scheme.

A total of 139 petitions were received from the village before the conduct of the mass contact programme. Of them, the grievances of 39 petitioners had been redressed. Senior officials were present in the programme.
