Erode:UNICEF gold medal to three NGOs for promoting total sanitation campaign

ERODE: One of the highlights of this year’s Republic Day celebration in the district will be the recognition of three non-government organisations’ role in promoting total sanitation campaign.

Collector R. Sudalaikannan will present the UNICEF gold medal to MYRADA, Bannari Rural Foundation (BRF) and Centre for Education and Empowerment of the Marginalised (CEEMA) for helping panchayats provide toilets to households.

The administration will recognise MYRADA for helping the Thalavady panchayat construct 266 toilets, BRF for assisting Ikkarai Negamam and Digganare panchayats construct 325 toilets and CEEMA for supporting Periya Veerasangli and P. Mangalam panchayats.

The villages the NGOs supported have all won the Nirmal Gram Puraskar award from the President of India for implementing total sanitation programme.

District Rural Development Agency Project Officer N. Sreenivasan says the panchayats won the award in 2008.

BRF partnered with the government in providing toilets to households in the two panchayats it took up, says A.N. Kolandaiswamy, executive treasurer.

The State Government provides Rs. 1,200 a toilet as subsidy and the rest has to be borne by the beneficiary.

The BRF chipped in with Rs. 1,500 a toilet and has so far spent around Rs. 4.5 lakh for the purpose, he says. BRF is the corporate social responsibility arm of Bannari Amman Group.

It did not stop with providing money but also motivated people to construct and use the same, says S. Shantha Mallappa, president, Digganare panchayat.

Mr. Kolandaiswamy says at Ikkarai Negamam panchayat his people spoke to students of the government school in the area to win over elders’ support.
