Ooty: Preparations apace for tourist season

Udhagamandalam: With wintry conditions showing signs of receding, preparations have commenced in this vacation destination for the summer tourist season.

While the planting operations in the Government Botanical Garden have more or less reached the final phase, pruning operations in the Government Rose Garden are now in full swing.

Stating that the plants are being pruned in a phased manner, Assistant Director of Horticulture A.J. Jagadeesh Kumar told ‘The Hindu’ here on Wednesday that it was to ensure that all the terraces do not wear a barren look at the same time.

The pruned bushes will start blooming in about 45 days.

The civic administration is confident that drinking water would not be scarce during the coming tourist season. Sources in the municipality said that the storage in all the reservoirs was better than what was obtained in the corresponding period last year. Attributing it to the heavy rains this hill station and its surroundings received last year, they said that the needs of the residents and visitors can be met without difficulty.

As regards the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve, one of the most popular tourist spots in the Nilgiris, sources said, “right now, there is no problem with the storage comfortable in the Ombetta and Game Hut reservoirs.” Wherever the conditions are dry, precautionary measures against jungle fires were being taken.

Meanwhile people in the travel and tourism sectors opined that only if efforts were made in a concerted and sincere manner can Udhagamandalam be made ‘presentable’ by the middle of March, when the tourist season begins.

The presence of stray animals, particularly cows and horses, on many of the roads is not only an eyesore but also a traffic hazard.
