Dubai to Eliminate Plastic Bags this Year

DUBAI — The Dubai Municipality (DM) on Thursday distributed dozens of oxo-biodegradable plastic bags around the city as part of its activities to mark the National Environment Day.

The event was also part of its yearlong campaign to phase out plastic bags from the market.

Though the Emirates Standard Authority has set 2013 as the deadline for companies to shift from using and manufacturing plastic bags, the municipality is focusing on achieving the target within this year.

“We are focusing on getting all companies to use these bags, and the encouraging fact is that already most of the big supermarkets and department stores including cooperative societies have started using them. Hopefully, more companies will follow suit,” said Hamdan Al Shaer, Head of Environment Awareness Section at the municipality.

The new bags, also called d2w, are being used by the DM and other municipalities in the UAE for nearly four years.
