Salem: Kailasanathar Temple soon to become tourist spot

Temple surroundings to be spruced up

SALEM: The ancient Sri Kailasanathar Temple will soon be converted into a major tourist spot.

Various developments at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh are being undertaken in and around the temple, which is architecturally rich with its exquisite sculptures. The Tamil Nadu Government has included the temple in its 18 least known destinations that need to be promoted for tourism with a boutique of development schemes. The other destinations that will be improved include Yelagiri, Hogenekkal and Kolli Hills.

The temple’s façade is being spruced up and its tank, remains a picture of neglect, will be desilted. The surrounding will also be spruced up to provide an aesthetic look to the temple. To maintain cleanliness a solid waste management project would also be introduced. High mast colour lamps and a park will be erected in front of it.

Tourism Secretary V. Iraianbu and Salem Collector J. Chandrakumar visited the temple on Monday and inspected the works. He said space would be identified for parking vehicles of tourists. The official team also inspected public infrastructure such as bus stand, Santhaipettai and tank areas where toilets would be constructed and parking slots.

A plastic boat would also be introduced in the temple tank to attract the tourists. He said that Government would allot 10 per cent subsidy to those who come forward to construct hotels and entertainment facilities. The subsidy could be up to Rs.1 crore. Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Joint Commissioner V. Raja and others accompanied the inspection team.
