Heavy rain lashes Salem; trees uprooted

Power supply disrupted for several hours
SALEM: Many huge trees were uprooted and power remained interrupted for long hours when rain accompanied by heavy wind lashed the city and its suburbs on Wednesday night bringing a respite to its citizens from the sweltering heat.
The rain lasted for an hour or so inundated low lying areas.
Six trees at Maravaneri Extension and trees at Town Railway Station, Anaimedu, Manal Market, Five Roads, Fairlands and Four Roads fell bringing down with them overhead high tension power cables thus plunging many parts of the city into darkness for nearly an hour.
Advertisement and other hoardings also fell at many places in the city.
Thammampatti, Mecheri and other suburban towns also received heavy rainfall. Traffic also was disrupted at many places following the overflowing sewers.
In Yercaud, power remained disrupted till Thursday morning.
