Chennai: Stormwater drain work begins in Korukkupet

WRD to desilt North Buckingham Canal at a cost of Rs.11 cr.

CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation on Friday launched work to construct stormwater drain network covering 12.76 km in Korukkupet. The work is being taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission at a cost of Rs.20.51 crore.

Commissioning work to build stormwater drain at Velan Nagar, Mayor M.Subramanian said many localities in and around Korukkupet would benefit from the project.

31 works

A total of 31 works, including construction of arterial drains covering 5.25 km, feeder drain running to a length of 6.38 km and five collector drain covering 1.13 km would be implemented in the catchment areas of North Buckingham Canal.

The areas that would benefit include the flood-prone Netaji Nagar, Rajasekaran Nagar, Sundaram Pillai Nagar, Meenambal Nagar, Azeez Nagar, Bojaraja Nagar and Basin Bridge Road.

Pointing out that nearly Rs.1,448 crore has been sanctioned under the JNNURM to improve micro- and macro-drains in the city, Mr.Subramanian said the Water Resources Department, a wing of the Public Works Department, would deepen and desilt North Buckingham Canal at a cost of Rs.11 crore.

The civic agency would construct stormwater drain for a length of about 290 km across the city and repair the existing network that is around 183 km long.

Improvement works on 16 waterways, covering a length of 28.64 km, would also be taken up.

These works would be completed in two and a half years, he added.
