Low-lying areas inundated, power supply disrupted
ERODE: Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm lashed many parts of Erode district on Sunday evening.
The sudden change in weather threw life in many parts of the district out of gear, though it did bring the much-needed relief from the sweltering heat. The power supply was disrupted for several hours, as power cables got snapped at several parts. A few electricity posts were also damaged during the rains.
In Erode town, sewage mixed with rainwater overflowed on the roads. Residential colonies located in the low-lying areas were flooded.
The strong dusty winds also resulted in uprooting of hoarding, electric poles and trees, besides damaging huts at several places.
A number of trees got uprooted and fell on the roads affecting the traffic in Bhavani, Gobichettipalayam, Anthiyur, Sathyamangalam and Chithode areas.
Farmers said that crops such as banana cultivated in large tracts of lands suffered huge damage. Other horticulture crops also suffered heavy loss.
Gobichettipalayam registered a maximum rainfall of 51.4 mm in the last 24 hour period ended at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.
Bhavani recorded a rainfall of 44.2 mm, while Erode registered a rainfall of 34 mm.
