Cauvery-Gundaru link project soon: Tamilnadu

KARUR: An ambitious project to connect the Cauvery and the Gundar at an estimated cost of Rs 2,180 crore is on the anvil. This was disclosed by Deputy Chief Minister M K Stalin here on Thursday.

Stalin, who inspected the reservoir alteration work in the Cauvery at Mayanur taken up at an estimated Rs 189 crore, later speaking to media persons, said, works over a stretch of 1.4 km across the Cauvery to connect Mayanur in Karur district and Seelaipillaiyarpudur in Namakkal district is under way at an estimated cost of Rs 189 crore. Once the work is completed roads would be laid to facilitate heavy vehicular traffic. Consequently, a travel distance of 45 km would be curtailed. The work had commenced on February 2 and work portions worth Rs 30 crore had so far been completed. As planned the work would be completed in February 2011. Once the work is completed 1.4 tmc of water could be stored in Mayanur. The water resources of four irrigation canals fed by the dam would also be strengthened. The ground water level would also improve, Stalin said.

Next the Cauvery-Gundaru canal link work would be taken up to connect the Cauvery, Gundaru, Agniyaru, Thenvellaru and the Vaigai. The Rs 2180 crore proposal for the project had been sent for the concurrence of the Central Government, Stalin added.
